Quarter plate ambrotype portrait. Matted with preserver in original embossed leather case with purple-ish red cut velvet pad. The image size approximately 3.25" x 4.25". Makers name impressed on the mat: "John C. Gray". Professionally resealed, slight crackle on the image, only visible if held at an angle, else a crisp and near fine image, the case is very good, neatly rebacked in full leather, with some light overall rubbing. Image of a young hunter standing and facing the camera, in hat and coat, holding a long rifle and with a powder horn slung over his shoulder. Subtle and tasteful tinting: pink on his cheeks, and gold on the metal parts of the rifle. The maker, John C. Gray, advertised both abrotype and daguerreotype-making between 1850-1856 in Jamestown, New York. The mat and preserver suggest the approximate date of 1855.
