About this Item
5 Handguns. Marker, glitter, paint(?) on repurposed plywood (3/4" thick, 9.5" x 20.5"). Circa 1999.Gowens (1918-2003), a black self-taught artist, was known to "shoot up a box of cartridges a week" in his yard in Sanford, Florida, reasoning that it might scare away anyone who might be lurking in the dark (https://www.orlandoweekly.com). His art pieces focus on guns, as he was seemingly obsessed with the topic after he was reportedly robbed of his guns on October 27, 1999 (a date referenced on this piece). Seller Inventory # 928
