1953, Hardcover Bellow's First National Book Award (1954) winning novel.Black and Grey cloth boards with orange outline of lettering on both front board as well as binding. Rubbing on top of binding along with a large dark stain. Unclipped dustjacket in very poor condition: half of the binding is missing which, unfortunately, has separated the front and back of dustjacket. John Steinbeck ad on the rear flap and no reviews. Jacket design by Robert Hallock. Both Time Magazine and the Modern Library Board named it one of the hundred best novels in the English language. Binding is clean and tight, corners unbumped. Endpapers are bright and clean. 536 pages firm but yellowed from age. Some pencilled underlining by prior owner. Seller Inventory # 566
