Brown was the first woman to be ordained as clergy with the consent of her denomination. Brown was also an articulate advocate for women s rights and one of the few first generation suffragists who were able to vote with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. She was an ardent abolitionist, claiming John Brown as among her heroes. She was deeply devoted to the enfranchisement of women of all races who eventually left Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton s National American Woman Suffrage Association because of white supremacist language and policies. Brown campaigned in the AERA alongside Francis Ellen Watkins Harper, Frederick Douglass, Lucy Stone, and Alice Paul. An incredibly important book on women s history in the United States.
