THOMPSON, THOMAS. An Account of Two Missionary Voyages by the Appointment of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. The one to New Jersey in North America, the other from America to the Coast of Guiney. London: For Benj. Dod, 1758. 8vo. [4], 87, [1] p. Contemporary sheep, rebacked in a slightly lighter calf, later endpapers. Extremities of boards a bit worn and scuffed, else a very nice copy. The advertisement on the verso of page 87 is cancelled with a blank, as usual. First and only edition. Thompson resided in Monmouth County, New Jersey, from September 1745 through November 1751 as an S.P.G. missionary, serving churches in Freehold, Shrewsbury, Middletown, and Allentown. He offers a good account of his ministerial services there, referring to numerous individuals, churches, and congregations. He then left New Jersey and sailed for Sierre Leone, West Africa, where he relates in detail the condition of the blacks, their customs, and their responses to his ministry.
