The author has had published ten previous volumes of poetry and a number of volumes of essays and literary criticism. Poet, university professor, literary historian, critic, and political activist, he was born in São João da Pesqueira, 1937. His doctorate in literature is from the École des Hautes Études, Paris, with a thesis on Fernando Pessoa.
