Don Segundo Sombra es considerada una obra maestra de la literatura hispanoamericana. En ella, Ricardo Güiraldes continua la linea trazada por Domingo Faustino Sarmiento en su Facundo, y Jose Hernandez en su Martin Fierro, al escribir una novela de la pampa, que rescata el lenguaje y la cultura vernacula, amenizada con descripciones de las faenas rurales y de sus hombres, captando, con estilo vigoroso y singular gallardia, la vida gauchesca, ruda y sufrida, encarnada en el gaucho ideal. Del heroe creado por Güiraldes, que se erige mas que como su alter ego con su guia, emerge una voz llena de realismo, y al mismo tiempo impregnada de imagineria campesina. Don Segundo Sombra representa, en oposicion a la vida citadina sometida por las reglas conservadoras y burguesas, la vida libre del hombre en la pampa que se mantiene, desde la soledad y el silencio, estoico en su lucha.

Ricardo Güiraldes nació en el seno de una familia de clase alta, de padre Manuel Güiraldes, hombre de gran cultura que llegó a ser intendente de Buenos Aires y Dolores Goñi su madre, perteneciente a una familia de gran renombre. Al año de tener a Ricardo Güiraldes, la familia se trasladó a Europa donde permaneció hasta 1890, cuando decidieron regresar a la Argentina. Su niñez y juventud transcurrieron entre San Antonio de Areco y Buenos Aires y terminada su educación inicial, comenzó las carreras de Arquitectura primero y Derecho después, abandonándolas pronto. Abandonadas las carreras, Ricardo Güiraldes viaja a Europa y Oriente en 1910, visitando Japón, Rusia, la India, Oriente Próximo y España, para finalmente fijar su lugar de residencia en París (Francia). En 1912 retornó a Buenos Aíres con la convicción de ser escritor, y tiempo después aparecieron sus primeros cuentos en la revista "Caras y caretas" En 1926 aparece la obra más notoria de Ricardo Güiraldes, "Don Segundo Sombra", novela emblemática para su época, donde narra la iniciación de un joven bastardo a manos del último gaucho, todo ello mezclado con descripciones de la vida campesina, relatos tradicionales y descripciones de la naturaleza que la imbrican en el regionalismo americano. En 1927 Ricardo Güiraldes realiza un viaje a Arcachón (Francia), pero debe ser trasladado de urgencia a París, donde fallece víctima de la enfermedad de Hodgkin (cáncer de los ganglios).
