TOMÁS DE KEMPIS. Tomás Hämerlein o Hämerken, (1380-1471), de origen humilde, nació en Kempen, cerca de Colonia. Profesó como monje agustino, llegando a ser un experto copista. Compuso obras de mística cristiana, entre las cuales destaca su Imitación de Cristo, aunque la atribución de la misma ha sido controvertida, pues hubo un tiempo en que se acordó su paternidad al teólogo francés Jean Charlier de Gerson. El trabajo traza, en cuatro libros, el laborioso progreso del alma hacia la perfección cristiana, su desapego con respecto al mundo y su unión con Dios. Obtuvo una amplia popularidad por su sorprendente simplicidad y sinceridad y la calidad universal de su enseñanza religiosa.
