First political novel to depict the true story of the Gulags in Pakistan. Fakhar Zaman is a politician and a journalist, five of whose books were banned by the Pakistani military regime in 1978. As political advisor to Nusrat Bhutto, Zaman spent six months in prison, and this is the (ostensibly fictionalized) report of his incarceration. This is the first expose of the draconian measures the judicial and prison authorities used in their attempts to eradicate dissent in the gulags. Khalid Hasan, writer, translator and journalist, is one of Pakistans best-known columnists and translators and his writings have appeared in various publications abroad. Khalid Hasan has written and edited 40 books, including several translations of the works of Saadat Hasan Manto and one collection
of the stories of Ghulam Abbas. His own collections include Rearview Mirror, Scorecard, Give Us Back Our Onions, The Umpire Strikes Back, Private View, The Fourth Estate, Return of the Onion, and Question Time. Authors Details: Inam Aziz was a respected journalist who started out as an apprentice on
an Urdu daily in Lahore. He worked in Peshawar on another paper and ultimately moved to Karachi where he rose to become news editor of Jang, Pakistans most widely circulated national Urdu daily. From print journalism, he went into broadcasting in the 1960s when he also worked for the BBC.

In this novel an unknown prisoner, known to gaolers and inmates alike as "Z", languishes in a tiny cell for an unspecified crime. Gradually "Z" assumes the status of a hero in a drama in which roles are reversed: the accused becomes the accuser, the oppressive regime becomes the criminal.
