After Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, executed a staggering number of political prisoners in Western Ukraine somewhere between 10,000 and 40,000 in the space of eight days, in one of the greatest atrocities perpetrated by the Soviet state. Yet the Great West Ukrainian Prison Massacre of 1941 is largely unknown. This sourcebook aims to change that, offering detailed scholarly analysis, eyewitness testimonies and profiles of known victims, and a selection of fiction, memoirs, and poetry that testifies to the lasting impact of the massacre in the collective memory of Ukrainians. Review:
The book is indispensable to scholars working in the field of Soviet nationality policies, the Holocaust, Ukrainian nationalism and Ukrainian-Polish relations. - Taras Kuzio, Center for Transatlantic Relations, Johns Hopkins University-SAIS, USA, Europe-Asia Studies[-] [-][-]'The Ukrainian prison massacre: more than a footnote to history', interview in Facts & Arts, read the full piece "http://www.factsandarts.com/essays/the-ukrainian-prison-massacre-more-than-a-footnote-to-history/">here.[-][-] [-][-]"Kiebuzinski and Motyl have compiled a useful book about an important subject that has been given little academic attention until now." - Marc Jansen, Raam op Rusland [-][-][-][-]
From the Back Cover:
After Germany launched Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union, on June 22, 1941, the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, slaughtered between 10,000 and 40,000 political prisoners in Western Ukraine in only eight days, a massacre that had been coordinated and planned by Soviet authorities. The Great West Ukrainian Prison Massacre of 1941 is important for several reasons. First, although it is one of the greatest atrocities committed by the Soviet state, the Massacre is largely unknown. Second, the Massacre is critical to an understanding of state-sponsored mass killings in the twentieth century and to human rights violations more generally. Third, the Massacre is central to making sense of Ukrainian and Polish attitudes toward World War II, Germany, the Soviet Union, and Jews. How nationally conscious Ukrainians and Poles responded to World War II and the Holocaust cannot be understood without an appreciation of the magnitude of the trauma of the Massacre of 1941.
