Synopsis

This book originated with the exhibition of work by Jean-Marc Bustamante at the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven in 1992. It is not, however, an exhibition catalogue in the usual sense. Later works and presentations in other museums are included so that it offers a first overview of his oeuvre. Jean-Marc Bustamante was born in Toulouse in 1952. While studying economics at the university he was attracted by art and photography. In 1975 he began a collaboration with the American photographer and film-maker William Klein, he produced a portfolio of him New York-54.55" in 1978. After spending two years as a photographic printer, he decided to look at the world through an 8 x 10 camera and in 1977 he realised his first Tableau. Over the next five years he produced more than 120 Tableaux, each one unique. They were presented for the first time as a corpus in 1994 in the Kunsthalle in Bern. Most of them are landscapes: nameless places on the edge of towns near Barcelona in Spain. In 1983 he began working with Bernard Bazile under the name BazileBustamante. Their projects, principally studies of visual codes and sign systems, attracted the attention of the art world. After 1987 Bustamante continued alone. The sculptures and installations seem heterogeneous and Bustamante works without a system or specific theories. He generates his own world without the conventions of the avant-garde. These pieces do not impose themselves on the viewer; this distance adds to their autonomy. So far Bustamante's work has been exhibited at the Kunsthalle Bern, Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld, Musée d'Art Moderne de Ia Ville de Paris in Paris, the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, documenta 8 and 9 in Kassel and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.
