Synopsis
This volume investigates the formation of the resultative construction and its effect on the establishment of the grammar of Modern Chinese. The resultative construction is a syntactic pattern consisiting of a verb plus an adjective or an intransitive verb, having the following features: phonologically, the two elements typically represent a disyllabic unit, and the second element tends to be phonologically reduced; semantically, the two elements stand in an "action-result" relationship in which the second element expresses the resulting state of the action; syntactically, the pattern is productive, and the two elements form a single constituent like a verb-compound.
