The fourth volume of LA QUESTIONE ARMENA covers the period 1908-1925, presenting the documents kept in the Vatican Secret Archives and in the Archivio Storico della Segreteria di Stato, Sezione per i Rapporti con gli Stati. The documents in this volume concentrate on four topics: the massacres at Adana of 1909; the 1915 genocide and the first papal autograph to the Sultan dated 10 November 1915 and aimed at stopping the massacres; the efforts of the Holy See to protect Christians of all rites, especially those threatened by massacre and famine in Syria and Lebanon; the famous peace note of Benedict XV dated 1 August 1917 proposing an independent Armenia and the second papal autograph to the Sultan dated 12 March 1918 calling for avoidance of new massacres of Armenians in the Caucasus, now occupied by the Turks after the withdrawal of Russian troops. Other documents illustrate the relief provided by the Holy See through various charitable organizations, not just limited to the Armenians. This volume reproduces in chronological order mostly unpublished documents. It contains short biographies of the main protagonists, an index of persons and places, an index of the documents and a lexicon of terminology. All of the documents are published in their original languages and most of them are in Italian, although the seven volumes also include many documents in their original form in various other languages. Georges-Henri Ruyssen SJ, a Belgian Jesuit born in Deinze (Flanders) in 1967, teaches at the Pontifical Oriental Institute (Rome) as well as at Centre Sèvres, Facultés Jésuites (Paris).
