L'ampio percorso tracciato da questo libro di Fabio Scotto, il primo che affronti la questione dalla prospettiva delle poetiche e non della mera teoria di genere, si colloca nell'evoluzione storica delle forme che ha nell'avvento del "poème en prose" simbolista il suo momento apicale e nell'eterodossia espressiva d'inizio Novecento un fecondo laboratorio di soluzioni immaginarie. Delineando da Nietzsche a Barthes l'orizzonte estetico fondativo novecentesco, Scotto prende in esame alcune delle figure maggiori della poesia francese contemporanea, da Char a Michaux, da Ponge a Leiris, o più appartate come Perros e Jourdan (e nel caso di Cioran troppo restrittivamente ascritte alla sola filosofia), fino alle cosiddette scritture lacunari. Ma la poesia, anche quando franta o ellittica, mantiene sempre un rapporto con l'immediatezza sensibile che ne fa una respirazione mentale, un silenzio teso fra una parola e l'altra, malgrado la sordità dei tempi, o l'urlo che lacera, come in Artaud, l'indifferenza del mondo con una parola arcaica resa puro suono.
