Language: - pages - - Trieste, Civico Museo Revoltella, 1996.

Condition: Sehr gut. 103 S. Einband leicht berieben. - Text engl. und ital. - Like the Valentine's heart motif that he turned into an immediately recognizable sign of his artistic identity in the mid-1960s, Jim Dine's reiterpretation since 1982 of the Venus de Milo, probably the most celebrated image of female beauty in western art, describes a trajectory from the public domain to the most private and personal sphere. Representations of small-scale plaster cast reproductions of the Louvre's Hellenistic statue first appeared as attributes of the studio in panoramic still-life paintings of 1977-8. Bathed in an atmosphere of intense longing and brooding solitude, and accompanied by other traditional motifs such as human skulls, these classical statuettes were reformulated by Dine from the beginning in much more subjective and Expressionistic terms. This synthesis of the classical tradition with Romanticism, of the optimistic Mediterranean ideal with the dark anxiety and introspective emotion characteristic of much Northern European art, quickly established a sense of duality within Dine's use of this highly particular embodiment of the female form.
