For the first time ever, all the species and subspecies of Mediterranean tree peonies that grow wild along the coasts from Gibraltar to the Dardanelles are described and illustrated. In the footsteps of the great Victorian plant hunters, author Gian Lupo Osti has found these plants in their natural habitat along the Mediterranean coasts and inner valleys and has studied, classified and photographed them. Their robust qualities, together with the beauty of their flowers, elegant bearing, ease of cultivation and rapid adjustment to all kinds of terrain, make these Mediterranean tree peonies perfect for many gardens.

Product Description:
Describes and illustrates twenty species of Mediterranean tree peonies that grow wild along the coasts from Gibraltar to the Dardenelles.
About the Author:
Gian Lupo Osti started his professional career by participating actively in the post-war reconstruction of government-owned industries. Following this, he took on top-management positions in several leading companies as managing director and general manager. In 1975 he gave up all these positions for irreconcilable differences in management strategies and dedicated himself to botanical research, in particular to finding the tree peonies on the mountains of China, which had not been seen again in the wild since the beginning of the twentieth century. The Chinese botanists have given his name to a tree peony found on the mountains of west-central China: Paeonia ostii. He also dedicated much time and effort to re-finding the herbaceous peonies which grow spontaneously around the Mediterranean. He is President of the Internaitonal Dendrology Society; he founded the Friends of the Hanbury Gardens (and was its first president), an association formed with the participation of the major British botanical institutions, for the renovation of the gardens of La Mortola. He has received the Veitchii Memorial gold medal from The Royal Horticultural Society, in acknowledgment of the contribution made to the advancement of horticulture and botany. He has published Il Libro delle peonie arboree (Allemandi, 1997), which has also been translated into English.
