About the Author:
Italo Svevo, pseudonimo di Aron Hector Schmitz, è stato uno scrittore e drammaturgo italiano. Fu autore di romanzi, racconti brevi e opere teatrali in lingua italiana. Frequentando un corso d'inglese alla Berlitz School di Trieste nel 1907, conosce lo scrittore irlandese James Joyce, suo insegnante. Joyce lo incoraggiò a scrivere un nuovo romanzo e, intorno al 1910, grazie al cognato, Bruno Veneziani, che su consiglio di Edoardo Weiss si reca a Vienna e cerca di farsi curare da Sigmund Freud, entra in contatto con la psicoanalisi freudiana. In Svevo confluiscono filoni di pensiero contraddittori e difficilmente conciliabili: da un lato il positivismo, la lezione di Darwin, il marxismo; dall'altro il pensiero negativo e antipositivista di Schopenhauer, di Nietzsche e di Freud.
