William Legrand, tras sufrir problemas económicos, se trasladó a la isla Sullivan, donde fijó su residencia. Se dedicaba a la caza y pesca. Salía a excursiones acompañado de su sirviente negro, Júpiter. El narrador anónimo de la historia entabló amistad con Legrand. Una tarde lo visitó y se enteró que Legrand había encontrado un escarabajo de oro. No lo vio porque Legrand lo había entregado a un teniente. Esa tarde los dos amigos tuvieron algunos malentendidos, así, el narrador se despidió y se fue a su casa.

Edgar Allan Poe es considerado el maestro del relato corto y renovador de la novela gótica. A raíz de sus cuentos analíticos y de misterio, lo catalogan como el inventor del relato detectivesco. Poe hela la sangre del lector, combinando lo gótico con lo psicológico. Nace en 1809 en Boston y muere con apenas 40 años de 1849 en Baltimore, Estados Unidos.
