A best-selling and award-winning Argentine author uses historical fiction written in the third-person to explore the controversial life and times of Spain's only reigning queen, whose disputed claim to the throne was not only creating a European dynastic imbalance leading directly to the Franco-Prussian War, but also instigating a constitutional crisis and the bitter Carlist Warswithin Spain itself, which many still see as the ultimate cause of the Spanish Civil War—and the rise of Franco to power. A child of incest and precocious in every respect, Isabel II was crowned queen at the age of 13 and given in marriage at the age of 16 to a cousin that only aroused her contempt and to whom she was obliged by weighty reasons of State. She established bourgeois liberalism and reigned in one of the most difficult periods in nineteenth-century Spain.
