The book My Friend The refugee's journey explained and illustrated by the children, is a new project by Open Cultural Center whose objective is to raise awareness and public sensitivity regarding the reality of thousands of refugees as a result of war lasting months and years, getting poorer every day and stuck in a present with no solution. Adbul, Elaf and Amar are, among others, some of the children of the refugee camp in Cherso, in the northen area of Salonica who have drawn and explained their experience and who have signed the story of 'My Friend', a name used for European volunteers. The book consists in illustrations and short sentences by the children who tell their personal story in four parts: their lives in Syria, before and after the war; their journey to Europe; their life in the camps in Greece and the future. These chapters are complemented with a prologue of Màrius Serra and Rosa Montero for the catalan and spanish versions respectively, a small introduction contextualising the issue as well as an epilogue where the current situation of some of the authors is outlined. The book is mainly aimed for children, but is also very much for adults. It has been designed and laid out by Lluís Torres studio and printed by the group Maculart. The book, aside from being a tool to raise consciousness , can also be used as an educational tool in schools. Teachers can resort to it in class and the children can work with it through a number of activities to develop values related to inclusion, respect and tolerance towards other cultures.
