315pp , ABOUT THE AUTHOR :: Edgar Lawrence Doctorow (New York, January 6, 1931 ) is an American author of several novels acclaimed by specialists, which mixes history and criticism social.Doctorow grew up in Bronx , New York , educated by their parents , who were descendants of a Russian Jewish immigrant generation . In the Bronx High School of Science he excelled in artistic creation , reading books of all kinds ; then continued his education at Kenyon College , where he studied with John Crowe Ransom . After graduating with honors in 1952 , he worked at Columbia University before being drafted into the US Army and sent to Germany. He began his career as a lecturer at Columbia Pictures and later was editor of the New American Library in the early 1960s; during the same decade was also the chief editor of Dial Press, 1964 to 1969. Although he had previously written several books a1971 , was with the publication of The Book of Daniel when he began to be recognized and acclaimed . Four years after that came his next book, Ragtime , which represented a commercial success and was hailed by critics . Milo Forman took her to the cinema in 1981. E.L. Doctorow is one of America's most accomplished and acclaimed living writers. Winner of the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award (twice), the PEN/Faulkner Award, and the National Humanities Medal, he is the author of nine novels that have explored the drama of American life from the late 19th century to the 21st. Al Alvarez is a poet, literary critic, and author of many non-fiction books on topics ranging from suicide, divorce and dreams - The Savage God, Life After Marriage, Night - to poker and mountaineering - The Biggest Game in Town, Offshore. He was poetry editor of The Observer from 1956-66. He has contributed regularly to The New York Review of Books and The New Yorker. His most recent books are an autobiography, Where Did It All Go Right?, New & Selected Poems and The Writer's Voice. He lives in London.
