In January 1930 he married Carol Henning and moved to Pacific Grove. There he met Edward Ricketts , a marine biologist, with whom he maintained a close friendship . In 1932 he published The Pastures of Heaven , a collection of stories set in the city of Monterrey. The following year he published The Red Pony and To a God Unknown . In 1935 Tortilla Flat, novel for which he received his first literary prize , " The Gold Medal " award granted by the Commonwealth Club of California for the best written by a Californian .7 With this collection of humorous stories novel , wrote Steinbeck won some success.
