His father was an employee of a local hardware store. He was educated at Dawley Church of England and the School of Coalbrookdale old school for girls . [ 1] She had Welsh ancestry, and many of his stories and books ( both fiction and nonfiction ) are set in Wales and the border areas , and / or have protagonists of Wales. During World War II , she worked in an administrative role in women's Royal Naval Service (the " Wrens " ) , and reached the rank of sergeant major of January 1, 1944 , when he was awarded the Medal of the British Empire ( BEM) in the New Year Honours . [2 ] In 1947 he visited Czechoslovakia and was fascinated by the Czech language and culture . She became fluent in Czech and published winning translations of Czech poetry and prose into English. [3 ] He devoted the rest of his life to writing , both fiction and nonfiction well documented. He never attended college but became a self-taught scholar in the areas that interested him , especially Shropshire and Wales. Birmingham University gave him an honorary Masters . She wrote in a series of pseudonyms , he was under the name of Ellis Peters who wrote the very popular series Cadfael medieval mystery brothers , many of which were made into films for television. Brother Cadfael Chronicles drew international attention to Shrewsbury and its history, and largely increased tourism to the city.
