El mundo germano de 1820 vivía inmerso en una fuerte represión que cerraba periódicos y podía llevar a la cárcel a aquellos intelectuales que se revelarán contra el orden de la Restauración. En ese contexto se recibieron las noticias del levantamiento de Rafael del Riego y el restablecimiento de la Constitución de Cádiz. Una parte de la sociedad alemana reaccionó con la esperanza de que esa ola de apertura se expandiera también por Europa; otra parte, sin embargo, manifestó su miedo a que el movimiento revolucionario español trajera la anarquía y la guerra, como había sucedido con la Revolución Francesa. Entre esos dos polos se moverá la recepción del Trienio Liberal en los territorios de habla alemana. Sin lugar a dudas, los escritores alemanes del Romanticismo se interesaron por lo que sucedía en España. No obstante, la censura, especialmente vigilante hacia todo lo relacionado con el Trienio Liberal, hizo muy difícil que el levantamiento español ocupara un lugar primordial en sus obras, en parte también porque su rápido final decepcionó a los liberales. En este libro estudiamos el reflejo de los sucesos españoles entre 1820 y 1823 en la poesía y algunos escritos ensayísticos germanos. Para ello hemos investigado la obra de los escritores del momento, tanto de los más relevantes como de otros que ya han sido olvidados.
