Synopsis

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

José Luis Perales's first novel narrates the story of a Castilian town throughout three generations. An homage to the country life through a choral novel about love, roots, and the relationship between parents and children.
The Castro is a traditional town in Castille that has been fighting oblivion for a long time. The inhabitants have lived, dreamed, and loved along its dirt streets, in the shadows of the ancient elms, facing the old St. Nicholas church or in the high overlook above the river. But, although the years pass and the village elders see how their descendants abandon the houses they were born in, there is always someone who returns to face nostalgia and remember each one of their stories. Like Evaristo Salinas's first love, the deaf and mute watchmaker; or Victorino Cabañas's long voyage in a hot air balloon; or Claudio Pedraza's passion cut short by the outbreak of war; or the legendary beauty of Cíngara the gypsy and her property carved into a cave...

Stories that are also the tale of the 20th century in Spain with El Castro as a witness and protagonist in a book that will touch readers' hearts.
José Luis Perales was born in 1945 in Castejón, a small town in the province of Cuenca, in the heart of a family of low economic status. Little by little, music guided his steps until one song, Niebla, written at 16 years old, marked the beginning of a long career as an author. A recording director hired him as a composer for his company's artists. And that's how he started to write for people as varied as Marián Conde, Tartesos, Juan Bau, and Fórmula Quinta, among others. He became part of the company Hispavox as a writer, and for over thirty years many famous artists have recorded his themes, such as Lola Flores, Rocío Jurado, Mocedades, Jose Luis Rodríguez, #El Puma#, Isabel Pantoja, and José Feliciano.
He combined his work as a composer with that of author, debuting with Celos de mi guitarra. This was the first in a long list of successes such as Y te vas, Un velero llamado Libertad, Te quiero, Y quién es él, and Que canten los niños, forming a forty-year-long career that continues to have an impact on the entire Spanish-speaking world.

In addition to music, José Luis Perales is passionate about gardening, archaeology, and literature. After many years of imagining stories and bringing them to life in the lyrics of his songs, he published his first novel in Plaza & Janés, a marvelous choral story, with echos of Latin American magic realism, which tells the story of a Castilian town and its inhabitants throughout the 20th century.
