Review:
This is a fascinating, brave and honest book. The author has every reason to stick to the Indian 'party line' on Jinnah and all his works, but he is courageous enough to examine the facts and arrive at his own conclusions. In his account of the last two years before independence, the only people to emerge with their reputations even half-way intact are Maulana Azad and Archibald Wavell. It's a sad story of an avoidable catastrophe that could have been avoided if enough people (mainly on the Nationalist side) had risen to the challenge. The author refuses to canonise or demonise the characters who appear. His assessments are, in the main, balanced, fair and with an inclination to be charitable. That even goes for Winston Churchill (a notorious bete noire for the Indians). That said, this is a book that is desperately in need of an editing it never received. At times, it is very hard to decipher just what point the author is trying to make. It is one of these books with a 'cast of thousands' where the reader is assumed to know who was who. The reader who doesn't soon becomes hopelessly lost. Is reading it worth the effort? This reviewer feels that he is a better and more informed person. So do take a deep breath and stick with it: it has its rewards. --by David McKee on 13 Nov. 2014
