近些年来，"笔墨"成了讨论中国画的热门话题，而对中国画的造型观关注不多。笔墨的终目的是为"造型"服务的，古代水墨画往往是通过"以大观小""目识心记""心斋""坐忘"和"以心观物"等中国式的观察和体悟，再运用线条、墨色，通过钩皴点染、于湿浓淡等笔墨语言，表现客观物象的阴阳向背，并运用"留白"等艺术表现技巧营造虚实疏密的画面。"笔墨"与"造型"是相辅相成、紧密相连的整体。没有笔墨，造型就失去了载体；失去了造型，笔墨也就无所依托。笔墨与造型相辅相成，好的笔墨为造型增彩，好的造型又促进了笔墨的发挥，水墨画的意蕴正是在这两者的巧妙结合中产生。笔墨与造型是中国古代水墨画独特性中重要、根本的一对关键词，统摄着古代水墨画的创作表达。
在西方文化的强势之下，对景写生已经成为学院中国画教学中的重要组成部分，厢毛笔嘲素描也成了，中国画的新传统，将西方具象观察法用在意象造型的中国画上，既奇怪又勉强。这种"视网膜成像式"的观察、写生，造成了"非驴非马"的新中国画，意蕴顿失。清代的恽寿平就曾说："近人只求形似，愈似所以愈离。"《中国古代水墨画造型观研究》试图对中国古代水墨画的造型观进行梳理和归纳，用中国的观念和语言来解释中国占代绘画，并为当代中国画创作提供借鉴。
