千佛崖，位于广元市城北十里的嘉陵江东岸山崖上，山顶距现在崖前地面高84米，窟龛最高处距地面45．5米，大小龛窟层叠分布，密如蜂巢，最密集的区域内有13层之多。主要开凿于北朝至唐代，五代、宋、元时期主要是装彩，清代有少量开凿，仍以装彩为主。现存龛窟848个一不含窟、龛内补凿的龛像一，是四川境内规模最大的石窟寺和摩崖造像群。 千佛崖在唐代称作柏堂寺，是千佛崖最辉煌的时期，有多龛一窟一朝廷重臣造像，如睿宗朝利州刺史毕重华开凿的365窟和366号窟一弥勒窟和菩提瑞像窟一，玄宗朝宰相、监察御史苏□造211号龛(苏□龛)、剑南按察使、益州都督府长史韦抗造513号窟(韦抗窟)。五代时仍称柏堂寺，有后蜀越国夫人重装菩提瑞像窟、王重绪造经幢等。之后以装彩及游记为主，少有造像。两宋时期沿用柏堂寺名，元代改称"千佛崖"至今...... 四川省文物管理局、成都文物考古研究所、北京大学中国考古学研究中心、广元千佛崖石刻艺术博物馆编写的《广元石窟内容总录(千佛崖卷上下)》除了造像之外，还有历朝题记近100则。
