In the century between 1450 and 1550, man's horizons were pushed back with astounding speed. Europe suddenly became conscious of the world, and out of the ferment of new ideas arose great men and enterprises to mark that epoch as a major one of human history. The event that served as climax to this conquest of the earth was the first circumnavigation of the earth in the years 1519-1522. Magellan's predecessors had been groping step by fearful step into the unknown - his bold voyage reached the limits of exploration and those who followed perforce contented themselves with filling in the details. It was Magellan's greatest strength that he entertained a lively suspicion of the benevolence of fortune, and when he set the bows of his five small vessels toward the West they were equipped to combat every misfortune that human foresight could envision. It was as well, for the expedition met misfortunes aplenty in that voyage through strange and empty seas: mutiny, famine, hurricanes, faulty charts, hostile natives, the inevitable deterioration of men and ships on the three-year voyage. Two hundred and sixty-five men departed from Seville; eighteen returned home. Magellan himself fell upon a distant island and no mark stands over his grave. He did not fall, however, until he had brought his comrades back into known waters. He had accomplished the task, though he never lived to reap the glory.
