About the Author:
Born in 1941 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Bruce Nauman has been recognized since the early 1970s as one of the most innovative and provocative of America's contemporary artists. Nauman finds inspiration in the activities, speech, and materials of everyday life and works in the diverse mediums of sculpture, video, film, printmaking, performance, and installation. Dr Veit Gorner, born in Munich in 1953, has been director of the kestnergesellschaft in Hannover since 2003. He lives in Hannover and Stuttgart.Gorner, has organised extensive solo exhibitions - often for the first time in Germany - with the following internationally renowned artists, among others: Gary Hume, Cindy Sherman, Miquel Barcelo, Fischli & Weiss, Anton Corbijn, Candida Hofer. Curator at the Kestnergesellschaft Hannover, Germany.

Das Wasser wird in einem großen Bassin gesammelt und von dort in die Fischkörper gepumpt und stellt einen stetigen Kreislauf dar, der die friedvolle und heitere Atmosphäre von Wasserspielen und Springbrunnen jedoch gezielt zu brechen weiß. So füllen sich die Fische unangenehm geräuschvoll mit Wasser, das sie ebenso geräuschvoll wieder ausspucken, bis die präzise programmierten Pumpen sich gleichzeitig ausschalten und den Rest des Wassers geräuschlos aus den aufgebohrten Fischleibern rinnen lassen. Für nur kurze Zeit kehrt Ruhe ein, bevor die Pumpen anspringen und die Fische wieder zu Wasserspeiern werden.Der Fisch als ikonografische Größe taucht in Naumans Werk bereits in der Arbeit 'Fishing for an Asian Carp' aus dem Jahr 1966 auf. Die in 'One Hundred Fish Fountain' dargestellten Frischwasserfische, wie z.B. Lachs, Felchen, Barsch und Wels sind allesamt Fische, die Nauman während langer Angelausflüge mit seinem Vater an den Michigan See geangelt hat, womit das Biografische auch in diese Arbeit Einzug erhält und mit den Aspekten von Verführerischem und Abstoßendem zu einer Ikone des Naumanschen Bild- und Denkuniversums verschmilzt.
