Drawing inspiration from the messiness, violence and beauty of the world around them together with the writings of Stephen Jones, DED have unfurled their vision and planted something new. Innovatively, the book's design is a literal and emotional reaction to the text. The illustrations convey the fragmented thoughts of Jack as he takes an unwanted and disturbing journey into his own sense of loss. Stephen Jones's bizarre narrative describes how absurd life can be in the new millennium. He uses consumer goods, ads, themes and McPlaces as effective metaphors of the everyday. DED Ass. transfers these into graphic illustrations. The result is an experimental combination of graphics and text, full of bittersweet irony and humour. In 1991, Nik and Jon Daughtry founded DED Associates in Sheffield. DED's commitment has seen the company shoot into every corner of the creative sphere. Mainly known for their diverse works for music labels, DED's commissions reach from MTV, Hydrogene Dukebox, MasterCard, Nissan, The (Millennium) Dome and the unnamed.

Stephen Jones is reputed as the musician and songwriter of his band "Babybird".

Sheffield has been home to some of Britain's grooviest musicians, design studios and record labels: Warp Records, The Designers' Republic, even the Human League. Let us not leave off the list DED Associates, a gaggle of young design talent that produces for multimedia, broadcast and print. Clients have included a bizarre mishmash from MTV to MasterCard.

You're quite right to worry about any collective that describes itself as "an organic gro-bag of green-sprouting creativity, surging forward with an unquenchable desire to innovate, experiment, push and adapt", one that has "shot into every corner of the creative sphere". Just ignore this bit and concentrate on the pictures.

This book's strength is definitely the imagery; musician and novelist Stephen Jones' annotations are so postmodern and full of concise brevity that you often can't tell what was the point of the project. It shouldn't matter to you, though; DEDD's luscious colours, divine shapes and superb sense of balance and space needs no explanation. --Liz Bailey
