Thanks to globalization and digitalization more and more aspects of our business lives and leisure time are taking place on the internet. Consequently, there is more pressure to create the proper setting when we actually do come together. The spaces where we come into face-to-face contact with our target audiences have to be precisely arranged in order to make an impact or to communicate information effectively on an emotional level. That is why so many different creatives are currently working on developing designs in physical space. Staging Space presents an extensive collection of work in which images and space meld seamlessly into a single narrative entity. The spectrum of examples includes exhibition and event architecture, interior design, art installation, and stage design as well as multimedia brand concepts and light projections on city surfaces. The book also features an array of hybrid solutions whose focus lies on using space to achieve pre-defined dramatic effects. The diverse international work collected in Staging Space demonstrates inspirational new applications for aesthetics, information technology, and sales pitches. Because this work crosses boundaries between creative disciplines and defies convention, it gives us the opportunity to appreciate the added value of a well thought-out presentation in physical space. This insight is especially relevant for those working as designers, interior decorators, and set designers, but also for those in advertising and marketing.

Review:
As the predominance of the virtual over the tangible continues, more and more of our lives go online to the point that it seems possible to believe that spatial design is becoming obsolete. That being so, the places in which we come together to share collective experiences need to work harder than ever before to remind us of the positive effects of physical space. With that maxim in mind, this publication is right on the money, capturing the mood of the times in experiential design. Coming from Gestalten, the book is high quality with a no-frills approach that lets the projects speak for themselves. The work featured covers a variety of applications ranging from the expected in the early chapters; exhibition and event architecture and interior design, to the unexpected; stage design, multimedia brand concepts, art installations plus a few indefinable examples from leftfield...and an Austrian salt mine. All add up to demonstrate that, in space, anything is actually possible. Staging Spaces main failing, and this is more of a niggle really, is that it suffers by its own remit. By attempting to document a zeitgeist, it inevitably has ended up featuring work created for prestige applications with similar briefs and aesthetic intentions and so any municipal and public sector work that might have increased the variety even further seems lacking. This could suggest that such work is simply not happening in those areas and that, ironically it has been left to the likes of Google and their much quoted office interiors to lead the way but it could mean also that the editors have not spread the net wide enough. Whichever is the correct answer, when taken on its own merits Staging Spaces succeeds as a truly inspirational book and comes highly recommended for creative s working in every field. --Whiteboard Journal
