The people in Mona Kuhn’s photographs are nude but not naked. Completely relaxed before the camera, they give the impression that nothing could clothe them better than their own skin. With a unique style, Kuhn’s intimate photographs of both young and old are sensual compositions of skin and wrinkles, light and shadow, gestures and gazes. She creates taughtly composed images which balance sharply rendered portraits against blurred backgrounds to lure the eye and provoke the imagination. A Los Angeles-based artist of German-Brazilian ancestry, Kuhn photographs in naturist communities in France. The models are her friends, and the resulting photographs reveal a comfortable and graceful intimacy between the artist and her subjects. Containing luscious young bodies that suggest the meditative repose of classical statuary, the mood is languorous, projecting an almost Edenic eroticism that is neither “sexy” nor exploitative.

Book. Book Description Hardcover. Condition: New in publisher's shrink wrap. First edition. Folio (12 1/4 x 11 3/4"). 96pp. Original tan quarter-cloth over photo-illustrated boards with red and white lettering on cover, red on spine. No jacket as issued. Designed by Mona Kuhn and Gerhard Steidl. Illustrated with thirty-three duotones and twenty color photographs. "Mona Kuhn is a photographer and lens-based media artist. Acclaimed for her contemporary depictions, Kuhn is considered a leading artist in the world of figurative discourse. Throughout a career spanning more than twenty years, Kuhn's practice is focused on the mysteries of the physical and metaphysical presence of the figure. Kuhn looks at the figure and representation as a platform to our complex emotions, desires and fears. As she solidified her photographic style, Kuhn created a notable approach to the nude by developing friendships with her subjects, and employing a range of playful visual strategies that use natural light and minimalist settings to evoke a sublime sense of comfort between the human figure and its environment. Her work is natural, restful, and a reinterpretation of the nude in the canon of contemporary art." (Mona Kuhn). Born 1969 in São Paulo, Brazil, Mona Kuhn is a German-Brazilian contemporary photographer best known for her large-scale photographs of the nude human form and essence. Seller Inventory # 49534
