The major purpose of this study was to assess the Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education (SAFE) program in relation to the perceived job competence of the mid-career extension staff. The extension staff completed the BS agricultural extension degree at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. This study also assessed the perceptions of the extension staff supervisors regarding the job competence of the extension staff. Perceptions of the extension faculty regarding the SAFE program were also investigated. The study was a descriptive research. Data were collected through a survey instrument from a sample of extension staff who work in the 10 regions of Ghana. A snowball sampling technique was used to select the research sample size of 64 extension staff from the population of 208 who completed the SAFE BS extension program from 1996 to 2004. Fourteen field supervisors provided assessments for forty-two of the extension staff (1996 to 2003) graduates. The remaining twenty-two extension staff were 2004 graduates and their assessment was completed in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, University of Cape of Coast, without their supervisors.
