More than four centuries after its first publication, it is one of the jewels of urban cartography and city studies. This reprint includes all 230 color plates taken from Civitates orbis terrarum, a collection of city map engravings, made between 1572 and 1617. With plants, bird's eye views and maps of all the major cities of Europe, in addition to important centers in Asia, Africa and Latin America, this masterpiece of urban cartography offers the reader a vast fresco of city life at the turn of the seventeenth century. Curated and annotated by the theologian and editor Georg Braun and with numerous etchings by Franz Hogenberg, the work involved hundreds of artists and cartographers who contributed not only with views of the city, but also with additional elements such as characters in traditional clothes, scenes set in classrooms of justice and topographical details, to convey the sense of place, the commercial power and the political influence of every represented city. The reprint contextualizes the tables thanks to some extracts selected from Braun's original texts on the history and meaning of each urban center, as well as in-depth comments to place each map in its cartographic and cultural context.

"It is fascinating from start to finish, and gives you a far more vivid sense of Renaissance Europe than any history book could."
