About the Author
Ingo F. Walther (1940-2007) was born in Berlin and studied medieval studies, literature, and art history in Frankfurt am Main and Munich. He has published numerous books on the art of the Middle Ages and of the 19th and 20th centuries. Walther's many titles for TASCHEN include Picasso, Art of the 20th Century, and Codices Illustres.

Books are bright and clean in light gray boards. Boards and text blocks are sharp cornered. Full color dust jackets show minimal normal shelf rubbing as well as mild sun fade and wear to spines. The slipcase, however, is merely acceptable, as it shows soil overall, a series of pale stains at the rear leading edge as well as a 1.5" square soiled sticker ghost, and a 1/2" split at the the upper rear leading edge corner. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. This set is beautifully illustrated and contains 765 vibrant color illustrations and 355 in black & white--many are full page. This is a large, oversize set, about 10" x 13" each and contained in a pictorial slipcase. The text is in English and the type is large and easily read (unlike some of the later editions of this work). Volume 1 covers impressionist art in France by Peter H. Feist and Volume 2 covers Europe and North America with a narrative by six authors. Vol. 2 has a 72 page appendix containing brief biographies of 236 artists with small portaits in b&w, bibliography and a name index. The text is in English. Four pages in vol. 1 have a tiny crimp to upper corner (about 1/16"0, else this is a very nice set that has seen little use. It is bound in original gray cloth binding with white spine and cover lettering. The dust jackets are also in very nice condition with no chips, creasing, or siginificant wear. The slip case has a little wear to images and there is a 2" split at one corner at the top edge. In all, this is an authoritative, well-regarded, and beautifully illustrated set that weighs about 12 pounds; priority shipping will require extra postage.
