El desgaste de la piel, la miseria y la mortalidad, así como el envejecimiento del abatido monarca, le preocuparon cada vez más en sus últimos aos. El poder, la perspicacia y la técnica brillante de estas pinturas ejercieron una profunda influencia en artistas posteriores tales como Manet, Delacroix, Picasso y Bacon.
