Der christliche Humanismus Petrarcas wurde in der Folge zur bestimmenden Position gegen die auf Aristoteles rückgreifende Scholastik.
Francesco Petrarca wird 1304 als Sohn eines Notars in Arezzo geboren. Nach juristischen Studien läßt er sich 1326 in Avignon zum Priester weihen. Seinem unsteten Leben, das von vielen Wohnortwechseln und Reisen geprägt ist, entspricht ein vielgestaltiges Werk. Petrarcas Hauptaugenmerk gilt der Wiederentdeckung antiker Autoren. Um 1338 entsteht das Epos Africa, das sich mit der römischen Geschichte und den Punischen Kriegen beschäftigt und für welches Petrarca drei Jahre später den ihm zu Ehren wieder eingeführten römischen Dichterlorbeer erhält. Aber auch der Einsatz der italienischen Volkssprache in den berühmt gewordenen Canzonen an Laura zeigen sein Werk am Übergang von mittelalterlicher Tradition zur neuzeitlichen Literatur. Auf der Flucht vor der Pest geht Petrarca 1362 nach Venedig, wo 1367 Über seine und vieler anderer Unwissenheit entsteht. Der Text zeigt Petrarcas christlichen Humanismus, mit dem er sich gegen die aristotelisch ausgerichtete Scholastik wendet. Die von ihm gebrandmarkte Unwissenheit der anderen ist die der Materialisten, die nicht zur Erkenntnis des Göttlichen vordringen. Zentral ist jedoch ein Wissen, das der Rettung der Seele dienen soll. Petrarca stirbt im hohen Alter von 70 Jahren in Arquà.
