With the painting Onement I of 1948, Barnett Newman entered into the deciding phase of his artistic career. Finally, after many years of searching, he had found his own forms of expression: the great colour fields and famous "zips "-long, narrow bands-brought him closer to his goal, to express the sublime in painting. In contrast to the art of Mondrian, however, Newman's painting was not about the relationship between geometric forms. Rather, the "scale" underlying his works was based on feeling, arising from the emotion and imagination of the painter. Only late in his career, in 1961, did Newman first turn to lithography. For him it was not a "poor man's substitute for painting or for drawing," but rather an autonomous instrument. Newman's printmaking "did not stand in a relationship of dependence to his other, diverse means of expression, but in dialogue with them"; all are grounded in the same artistic language. In this volume the complete prints of Barnett Newman from 1961 to 1969 are presented in a comprehensive illustrated catalogue. The lithographs, etchings, and the hitherto unpublished silkscreen The Moment provide an introduction to the vocabulary of his art. The expressive black and white lithographs, the lithographic series 18 Cantos in five colours, the Notes, and the rigorously composed etchings manifest Newman's artistic language in a more intimately accessible way than in his paintings. An extensive essay examines the independent role of the prints as well as their relation to Newman's painting, drawing, and sculpture.
