Reviewing some long forgotten works on the patent system this monograph begins by focusing on Venetian texts on the 14th and 15th centuries. It observes how patent policy was then more enlightened than in the period from the 17th to middle 20th centuries. The author gives an overview of existing national patent systems and attempts to devise a revised patent system using the Nordhaus theory of the optimal patent. Whilst arguing for and against modifying the present patent system, it is never forgotten that a patent is - at best - a second-best solution for the problem of stimulating inventive activity.
