Franz Kafka (1883 – 1924) war einer der wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Erzähler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein Leben verbrachte er überwiegend in seiner Geburtsstadt Prag. Kafka ist berühmt für seine grotesken und absurden Erzählungen und Romane. Viele davon erschienen postum: Herausgeber war Max Brod (1884 – 1968), sein enger Freund und Nachlassverwalter. Kafkas Werk lässt sich keiner literarischen Epoche oder Strömung zuordnen; sein Stil gilt als einzigartig. Bis in die Gegenwart haben sich Generationen von Lesern in seinen Werken erkannt.
