Oskar Matzerath hat alles gesehen und gehört, nichts ist ihm entgangen, denn er war ein hellhöriger Säugling, dessen geistige Entwicklung bereits bei der Geburt abgeschlossen war. Der Außenseiter, der Wirklichkeit ertrommeln und Glas zersingen kann, erweist sich dabei als der einzige Gesunde in einer Welt des Scheins, der Lüge und des Verbrechens.
