Nach dem Studium der Literatur war er einige Jahre im Staatsdienst tätig. Seine Karriere als gefeierter Romancier des russischen Realismus begann 1847 mit dem ersten Roman 'Eine alltägliche Geschichte' und erreichte ihren Höhepunkt mit 'Oblomow' (1859).
