Synopsis:
First published in May 2002, this inspirational account of Canada's first practising blind Physician received accolades from among others Keith Garebian in The globe and Mail and Susan Schwartz at the Montreal Gazette. This is much more than a story of adversity overcome; it chronicles a journey of faith and friendship that will move readers and leave them feeling privileged to share in this amazing story. Born in North Toronto in 1953, Jane Poulson looked forward to a bright future where comfortable circumstances, combined with the love of doting parents, made everything look possible. But at age 13, she received a devastating diagnosis: juvenile diabetes. This incurable disease left her blind at 27 and led to a lifetime of increasingly complex health problems. In the final phase of medical school in Montreal when she lost her sight, Poulson frankly confesses to the feelings of anger, fear, loathing and resentment that accompanied her disability. Nevertheless, she was determined to practise medicine, gradually accepting he adaptive strategies and the eyes of friends and colleagues that made it possible for her to become the doctor she always knew she could be.

Studying thousands of textbook pages for exams, navigating labyrinthine hospital corridors, examining unseen (and often somewhat surprised) patients, clocking endless shifts and sleepless nights, Poulson survived the rigours of the young doctor's life by determination, humour and hard-earned faith that carried her through her later challenges, a diagnosis of terminal breast cancer in 1998 and the lung cancer that led to her death in August 2001.
