Jan Saudek was ten when WWII ended in Europe. His memories of eating grass and toothpaste - the rations of poverty - are laced with a child's sense of humor. When American soldiers liberated Prague, they brought chocolate and fruit, sometimes wrapped in pages from comic books. It was thus Saudek learned English. He became a phographer's apprentice by chance, eager to escape a life in the mines, and only on seeing Edward Steichen's Family of Man did he know that photography would tell hishistory of Czechoslovakia to others.
