About the Author:
Né le 12 janvier 1876 à San Francisco, Jack London, de son vrai nom John Griffith Chaney connait une enfance difficile : abandonné par son père, mis en nourrice le temps que sa mère se soigne, puis finalement adopté par le second mari de sa mère. En 1886, il découvre l’existence d’une bibliothèque publique tenue par Ina Coolbrith,, première poétesse de Californie, qui lui fait découvrir la littérature. A 17 ans il gagne un concours de rédaction en prose avec Typhoon off the coast of Japan et se fait publier dans le San Francisco Morning Call. Il attendra cependant deux bonnes années avant de réintégrer le lycée d’Oakland ou il étudiera Karl Marx et Herbert Spencer. L’année suivante, il finira le programme universitaire de deux ans, en quatre mois, et publiera plusieurs récits d’aventures, dont les plus célèbres sont indubitablement L'appel de la forêt et Croc-Blanc, adaptés à plusieurs reprises à l'écran. Sa première autobiographie Ce que la vie signifie pour moi date de 1906. Il est mort le 22 novembre 1916.
