C'est un véritable phénomène, avec cent mille exemplaires de L'Immeuble Yacoubian vendus en quelques mois, un film en cours de tournage avec une grande mobilisation de moyens et d'acteurs célèbres. Très vite, poussé par la rumeur, le livre s'est répandu dans le monde arabe, a été traduit en anglais, et le voici aujourd'hui en français. L'auteur est un vrai Egyptien, enraciné dans la terre noire du Nil, de la même veine que Naguib Mahfouz. Il pose un regard tendre, affectueux, plein de pitié et de ccmpréhension sur ses personnages qui se débattent tous, riches et pauvres, bons et méchants, dans le même piège. Il ne juge pas, mais préfère nous montrer les espoirs puis la révolte de Taha, le jeune islamiste qui rêvait de devenir policier; l'amertume et le mal de vivre de Hatem, homosexuel dans une société qui lui permet de jouir mais lui interdit le respect de l'amour; il nous fait partager la nostalgie d'un passé révolu du vieil aristocrate Zaki; l'affairisme louche mêlé de bigoterie et de lubricité d'Azzam; la dérive de la belle et pauvre Boussaïna, tout cela à l'ombre inquiétante du Grand Homme, de ses polices et de ses sbires de haut vol ccmme l'apparatchik El-Fawli, et à celle non moins inquiétante d'un islam de ccmbat, qui semble être la seule issue pour une jeunesse à qui l'on n'a laissé aucun autre espoir. Alaa El Aswany ne cherche pas le scandale. Il nous dit simplement que le roi est nu. Il nous montre ce que chacun peut voir autour de lui mais que seule la littérature rend vraiment visible. Nous ccmprenons un peu mieux ccmment va l'Egypte, certes, mais aussi ccmment va le monde et -peut-être également -pourquoi explosent les bombes.
