Quand j'ai su que Lear avait lui-même fait un petit dessin pour accompagner son poème, je me suis dit que je pourrais l'illustrer en entier. Qui sont Les Jumblies ? Une bande de joyeux et très petits lurons qui décident de parcourir toutes les mers du globe dans une passoire, au désespoir de leurs parents qui les supplient de rester à la maison. Les 20 dessins d'Edward Gorey donnent vie à ce fouillis (c'est le sens original du mot jumble) de personnages excentriques et attachants.
