Un soir, au sortir de l'usine dans laquelle il travaille, August rencontre par hasard le directeur du théâtre l'Estonia. Il quitte son emploi d'ouvrier et intègre la troupe, qui s'avère aussi loufoque qu'hypersensible : Pinna, le fondateur, les comédiens Alexander, Eeda, Sällik, Oskar. mais aussi Erika, sa future femme, qui rejoint le théâtre peu de temps après lui. Elle symbolisera le Papillon, l'emblème du théâtre, en lui insufflant la légèreté dont le début de siècle prive le pays. Les planches de l'Estonia sont bientôt le seul lieu où la liberté et l'amour peuvent encore résonner, où les rires de l'amitié, les jeux et l'espièglerie ont encore leur place. Mais le théâtre, comme le papillon, est gracile : la brutale réalité du monde s'y invite, et, aux alentours, le chien gris qui la représente rôde et menace de soumettre cette troupe de rêveurs solidaires à la violence, à la séparation et à la mort. Le Papillon est le premier roman d'Andrus Kivirähk, et le résultat inattendu d'un travail qu'il menait initialement sur l'histoire du théâtre estonien. Emporté par son sujet, l'auteur a abandonné en cours de route son étude pour en incorporer les éléments à un roman mêlant l'histoire et l'imaginaire. On retrouve dans ce texte des comédiens ayant réellement existé, mais aussi les premières manifestations de l'imagination intense de l'écrivain (on y découvre notamment des femmes oiseaux, un comédien loup-garou ou encore un chien incarnant La Mort). Mais ce qui rend le livre si attachant et particulier dans l'oeuvre de Kivirähk, c'est avant tout sa beauté mélancolique. Le peuple estonien a principalement vécu, du Moyen Âge jusqu'à l'écroulement de l'URSS, une existence placée sous le signe de l'oppression et des invasions. Durant près d'un millénaire, il n'a connu l'indépendance qu'au vingtième siècle, au cours de la parenthèse dorée de l'Entre-deux-guerres.
