Ce texte fut publié en 1928 dans la revue Philosophique. Dans une perspective microsociologique et phénoménologique, Eugène Dupréel défend l'hypothèse que le rire relève toujours d'un rapport social. L'auteur l'oppose notamment aux perspectives philosophiques de Bergson. Et du point de vue psychosociologique, il établit une distinction entre le rire d'accueil et le rire d'exclusion, et appréhende les situations de rire les plus diverses.
